The Only Four Metrics That Matter: Who belongs on the Schoolhouse Lane bus?
by Darren McGrath
We've talked a lot recently about playing at full throttle, taking the fearless, maverick energy of Eddie Jordan and using it to build premium brands that refuse to be invisible. But a high-performance engine is nothing without the right crew in the pit lane.
The other night, the question came up: what exactly are we looking for in a new team member at Schoolhouse Lane? The answer didn't require a dense corporate slide deck or a list of buzzwords. It was simple, clear, and foundational.
We are entirely agnostic when it comes to age, gender, or geography. We don't care where you sit in the world, what generation you belong to, or what your background looks like. Talent doesn't care about coordinates, and neither do we.
We look for just four non-negotiable characteristics. If you possess them, you belong on the bus. If you're leading a category and want to collaborate, these are the traits you'll find in the person sitting across from you.

1. Genuine Talent
We don't do "good enough," and we don't hire for mere competence. Because we build high-leverage strategic assets and defensible tech infrastructures for our clients, our team has to possess elite, undeniable skill.
Whether your craft is visual design, technical engineering, data-driven SEO, or commercial strategy, you must be a master of your toolset. We look for people whose work commands attention and elevates the perceived value of everything it touches, people who treat brand as a measurable asset rather than a decorative layer.
2. Intellectual Curiosity
In our philosophy, curiosity isn't a passive trait; it's a diagnostic weapon. We use it to unearth latent commercial potential that others are too timid to look for.
If you join us, you cannot be content with executing a brief. You need a burning desire to understand the why behind the business model, the human behaviour behind the search query, and the mechanics of the market shift. You ask the extra question because you genuinely want to know how things work, and how to make them work better. This is the same lens we apply to our Creative Commerce methodology, where every touchpoint is interrogated for latent revenue potential.
3. A Hard-Working Ethos
Full-throttle energy requires stamina. The risks we take and the bold, premium brands we architect demand focus and rigorous discipline. We move fast, navigate complex category landscapes, and hold ourselves to a standard of upstream accountability.
That means everyone on the bus pulls their weight, owns their outcomes, and loves the thrill of outperforming the status quo. And to be clear, this is not a pressure cooker. True stamina is only sustainable inside a fearless organisation built on collective victory.
4. High Integrity
This is the chassis that holds everything else together. Without high integrity, talent is dangerous and hard work is wasted. We look for people who are radically honest, fiercely dependable, and aligned with our core belief that profit and purpose are the exact same engine.
We back our own instincts, but we do it with transparent ethics and a total commitment to protecting our clients' margins and reputations. This conviction is why the Ikigai principle shapes our culture of shared victory, and why we've written at length about the journey from Good to Great.

"First get the right people on the bus, the wrong people off the bus, and the right people in the right seats." Jim Collins, Good to Great
The Right People, The Right Seats
Genuine Talent: Elite, undeniable skill that elevates everything it touches.
Intellectual Curiosity: A compulsion to understand the why, not just execute the what.
A Hard-Working Ethos: The stamina to move fast, own outcomes, and outperform the status quo.
High Integrity: The chassis that makes talent and hard work worth anything at all.
These four traits are the entire hiring rubric, nothing more, nothing less. They're also the traits we look for in the founders, CMOs, and category leaders we choose to work with, because a great client relationship is really just an extension of the same crew.
If that sounds like you, we'd love to talk. Explore our open roles, get to know the team behind the work, or book a demo to see how the Schoolhouse Lane bus is being driven.
